Soap is made by mixing fats or oils with an alkali, in a chemical reaction called saponification. Our soap uses a mixture of fats including the fats in goat milk, coconut butter, and olive oil.
Goat milk is rich in both saturated and unsaturated fats. The saturated fats give our soap a rich, creamy lather, while the unsaturated fats provide moisturising and nourishing properties.
Goat milk soap is naturally gentle on sensitive skin, and is often the perfect choice for people with eczema, psoriasis or other dry skin conditions. We use only natural essential oils and leave out unnecessary additives and decorations, to ensure that our soap is suitable for everyone.
Norah (pictured left, with baby Robyn) joined our herd in December 2024, when she was about 4 years old. Until that point she had been living with a herd of sheep, and it took her a while to become comfortable around other goats. However, billy-goat Nelson fell in love with her at first sight, and quickly won her over. Norah and Nelson had two kids, Robyn and Rosa, in May 2025.
Norah is not a dairy goat - in fact, we think she may be a cross between a Boer (Nelson's breed) and a Cashmere. Boers are usually bred for meat, and Cashmeres for fibre, so Norah doesn't produce a lot of milk. Now that her kids are fully weaned, she usually gives 1/4 of a pint per day.
In October 2017, Victoria (chief soap-maker) became the first person to walk from John O'Groats to Land's End via the highest point of every historic county on the British mainland. Starting in early March, Victoria walked for 211 days, covering over 3,500 miles and climbing more than 119,000 metres to reach the highest points of 91 counties - that's equivalent to walking 1/7th of the way round the equator, and climbing 13 1/2 times the height of Everest.
Profits from the sale of the book will be shared with Mental Health Research UK.
Norah and the rest of the Dallow herd love to have visitors - especially visitors who bring carrots! If you'd like to arrange a visit, or if you'd like us to make a special batch of soap in your favourite fragrance, then please get in touch by email to norah_the_goat@dallowcottage.co.uk.
